Upcoming videoconference looks at relationship between nutrition and brain development in young children

AMES, Iowa--The brain's remarkable capacity to coordinate billions of neural connections, allowing cognition and creative thinking, has fascinated scientists for centuries. Brain development in early childhood, when a child is learning most essential cognitive and motor skills, is especially intriguing. This year's Current Issues in Nutrition Conference on April 27 will explore research in basic and applied science concerning the relationship between nutrition and cognitive development in young children.

"The program will feature nationally recognized experts discussing various aspects of nutrition and cognition, including how an infant's diet affects visual development and attention, the role of zinc in brain function, and the role of school meals in the learning environment," said Elisabeth Schafer, Iowa State University Extension nutritionist.

The program content is geared for nutritionists and dietitians, health care professionals and child development specialists. The conference will be of special interest to school and preschool personnel. Continuing education credits are available for a variety of health and education professionals. The conference originates at Iowa State University in Ames and will be downlinked to 56 Iowa counties, as well as other states.
