Lamb Classic Set For State Fair

Adults, 4-H and FFA members will compete in the Lamb Performance Classic at the 2000 Iowa State Fair. The classic uses growth evaluation, carcass merit and live score to determine overall winners.

"Young, fast-growing lambs that have muscle and stay lean will definitely be the most successful at the contest," said Dan Morrical, Iowa State University Extension Specialist in animal science.

Lamb nomination forms are available at the county Extension offices. These forms are due to the state 4-H Youth Development office by June 1. Entry fees must accompany the nomination forms and are $15 per lamb or $35 for a pen of three. Individuals may enter up to three lambs.

Although 4-H and FFA members and adults will compete in separate divisions, all lambs should be delivered to Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo on June 10, between 1 and 4 p.m. Ideally, lambs should weigh between 75 and 90 pounds at the time of delivery. Following a six-day adjustment period, lambs will begin a 56-day feed test to allow expression of their genetic merit for lean growth.

Lambs will be shipped as a group to the state fairgrounds where participants can work with the animals before the show on Sunday, August 13. After the live show, lambs will be shipped to Iowa Lamb for processing and carcass data collection.

Premiums have been donated for the 4-H and FFA Grand and Reserve Champions. The 2000 Lamb Performance Classic is sponsored by the Iowa 4-H Foundation, Iowa Foundation for Agriculture Advancement and their donors, Iowa Lamb Corporation, Iowa Sheep and Wool Promotion Board, Iowa Sheep Industry Association, Iowa State Fair, Hawkeye Community College, Land O'Lakes, Inc., Prairie Barn Hill, Kimm Suffolks and Premier Sheep Supplies.
