9/27/99 Contacts: Community Food Security Liaison Named AMES, Iowa -- U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman recently named Mary Swalla Holmes the community food security (CFS) liaison for Iowa. As CFS liaison, Swalla Holmes will serve as a single point of contact and resource coordinator for all USDA-associated community food security and anti-hunger activities within the state. "Our community food security liaisons will play a critical role in supporting local and community-based efforts in fighting hunger," Glickman said. Swalla Holmes is an employee of Iowa State University Extension, working with the agriculture and natural resources and the communities programs. She coordinates a statewide program that helps communities develop opportunities for farmers in their area. These opportunities include direct marketing, strengthening farmers' markets and developing more local markets for Iowa grown foods. The Iowa Department of Economic Development, ISU Extension and USDA Rural Development are supporting the program. ml: isufarm |
