9/14/99 Contacts: Carcass Results Given For 4-H State Fair Livestock Champions The carcass data on the 1999 Iowa State Fair Youth champion livestock were announced by Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. The champions were harvested by ISU at the animal science meat laboratory in Kildee Hall. Carcasses were evaluated and measured by ISU faculty and ISU Extension staff. Results follow for 14 animals in three species--beef, sheep and swine. Beef The 4-H grand champion steer owned by Alex Siek of Blairstown in Benton County had a hot carcass weight of 884 pounds, rib eye area of 17.2 square inches, fat cover of .35 and a quality grade of low choice. The 4-H champion market heifer owned by Tim Kohlhaas of Luverne in Kossuth County had a hot carcass weight of 829 pounds, rib eye area of 15.4 square inches, fat cover of .50 inch and a quality grade of low choice. The 4-H reserve champion steer owned Sean Good from Boone in Boone County had a hot carcass weight of 827 pounds, rib eye area of 15.9 square inches, fat cover of .35 inch and a quality grade of low choice. The 4-H reserve champion market heifer owned by Sammi Smith of Columbus Junction in Louisa County had a hot carcass weight of 756 pounds, rib eye area of 14.6 square inches, fat cover of .35 inch and a quality grade of low choice. Lamb The 4-H champion market lamb owned by Louise Knop of Atlantic in Cass County had a hot carcass weight of 70.9 pounds, rib eye area of 2.65 square inches, fat cover of .15 inch and a quality grade of low prime. The 4-H reserve champion market lamb owned by Ashley Graff or Osceola in Clarke County had a hot carcass weight of 62.9 pounds, rib eye area of 2.4 square inches, fat cover of .2 inch and a quality grade of high choice. The FFA champion market lamb owned by Nick Berry of Lake View in Sac County had a hot carcass weight of 82.5 pounds, rib eye area of 3.9 square inches, fat cover of .12 and a quality grade of high choice. The FFA reserve champion market lamb owned by Troy Schilder of Grinnell in Poweshiek County had a hot carcass weight of 71.2 pounds, rib eye area of 2.6 square inches, fat cover of .2 and a quality grade of high choice. Swine The 4-H champion market pig was reserve champion overall. It was owned by Krista Van Hauen of Grundy Center in Grundy County. It measured a hot carcass weight of 196 pounds, loin eye area of 7.3 square inches and tenth rib fat of .45 inch. The 4-H reserve champion market pig owned by Blair Everman of Postville in Allamakee County had a hot carcass weight of 218 pounds, loin eye area of 6.95 square inches and tenth rib fat of .6 inch. The FFA champion market pig owned by Tracy Henningsen of DeWitt in Clinton County had a hot carcass weight of 211 pounds, loin eye area of 8.15 square inches and tenth rib fat of .4 inch. The FFA reserve champion market pig owned by Jamie Lynch of Boone in Boone County had a hot carcass weight of 206 pounds, loin eye area of 6.65 square inches and tenth rib fat of .4 inch. The 4-H champion derby pig was champion overall. It was owned by Adam Rouse of Huxley in Story County. It measured a hot carcass weight of 206 pounds, loin eye area of 6.95 square inches and tenth rib fat of .7 inch. The 4-H reserve champion derby pig owned by Elizabeth Steffensmeier of West Point in Lee County had a hot carcass weight of 196 pounds, loin eye area of 7.4 square inches and tenth rib fat of .55 inch. Denise Schwab, 4-H livestock superintendent at the Iowa State Fair and youth development specialist for ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development, said, "The youth showed a fine set of animals that reflected what they learned in agriculture programs for youth and how they applied their new knowledge to raise their livestock."
