9/14/99 Contacts: National 4-H Week Set For Oct. 3-9 National 4-H Week is Oct. 3-9, a time for youth to celebrate and share what they have learned in 4-H. Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development Director Joe Kurth said 4-H programs reach more than 120,000 Iowa youth each year. School age youth can participate in community 4-H clubs, school enrichment programs, special interest groups and overnight camping. "The program focuses on helping provide the caring and nurturing environment that all Iowa youth so desperately need," Kurth said. 4-H programs strive to help youth develop a close relationship with at least one adult. 4-H'ers agree that 4-H has had a significant impact on their life. Youth say they have established friendships, gained leadership skills and had opportunities they never would have if they had not been involved in 4-H. They say they have become more well rounded and want to give back to their communities. Through 4-H, youth are able to gain a sense of inner direction, the ability to relate to others and sound decision-making skills, Kurth said.
