9/13/99 Contacts: ISU Extension Hoop Building to Offer Educational Programs and Live Radio Broadcasts AMES, Iowa -- New to the 1999 Farm Progress Show is the Iowa State University Extension hoop building. Throughout the day, the hoop building will feature a number of educational programs, live radio broadcasts and listening sessions, where ISU Extension staff can gain feedback from producers, agricultural leaders, farm families and agribusiness professionals on the current status of rural communities and farming. The Farm Progress Show is set for Sept. 28, 29 and 30 at Amana, Iowa. Producers, agricultural leaders, farm families and agribusinesses can express their thoughts and comments on the current status of rural communities and farming at the ISU Extension Listening Posts. "A series of mini-forums will be held to discuss a broad range of issues and topics with clients. The intent of the Listening Posts are to provide a setting where persons attending the Farm Progress Show can share their concerns, ideas and opinions to extension staff," said Paul Lasley, ISU Extension sociologist. "The Listening Post will provide a relaxing atmosphere with music to discuss current conditions in the farm economy and educational needs of farm and rural residents." Listening Posts will be held at 9 to 10 a.m., 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The ultrasound display and demonstrations will illustrate how ultrasound is being used to collect beef carcass traits and transform that data into genetic evaluations. Daily demonstrations also will show how ultrasound is performed on live animals to estimate carcass quality and lean content. "The ultrasound display will explain the consistency and quality control in procuring and processing the data from the cattle," Daryl Strohbehn, extension beef specialist at the Iowa Beef Center, said. "It will also show how ultrasound technology and carcass analysis have advanced." The ultrasound demonstrations will be held at 11:15 to noon and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Come learn more about Y2K. Stevin Dahl, North Central Regional Center for Rural Development assistant director, and Tom Noble, Iowa Manufacturing Extension Partnership associate director, will present Y2K and You.
