9/9/99 Contacts: Program Sept. 15: GMO Grain Needs Special Handling During and After Harvest AMES, Iowa -- Producers and agribusinesses dealing with genetically-modified grain this harvest are invited to attend a program on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. "Last week, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) sent a message encouraging their suppliers to segregate non-genetically enhanced crops to preserve their identity," said Jim Johnson, ISU Extension special projects coordinator for agriculture and natural resources. "This message has major ramifications for growers and for country elevators, and has been the main topic of discussion by farmers since the announcement." ISU Extension will offer the program via the Iowa Communications Network ((ICN) before harvest to help producers and others understand and plan for this new development, and the market implications. Check with your county extension office or on the World Wide Web at www.extension.iastate.edu for ICN sites and for additional information. Program topics include: potential demand for non-GMO corn and soybeans, Robert Wisner, ISU Extension economist; ADM's procedures for handling, marketing and pricing GMO and non-GMO corn and soybeans; elevator plans for handling GMO and non-GMO grain; a grain producer's plans for handling GMO and non-GMO grain; available tests and procedures for avoiding co-mingling on the farm, Charles Hurburgh, ISU Extension agricultural and biosystems engineer; dealing with warehouse receipt issues; legal issues, Steve Moline, Iowa Attorney General's Office; seed companies perspectives; and questions and discussion. ml: isufarm |
