Manure Plans Due Nov. 15

AMES, Iowa &endash; Pork producers are reminded that the deadline to file manure management plans with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is Nov. 15. Iowa law requires a manure management plan be submitted for any confinement operation with an average animal weight capacity of more than 200,000 pounds. All operations either constructed or expanded after May 31, 1985, are required to submit this plan. Also, people who apply manure to land in Iowa from a confinement feeding operation over 200,000 pounds located outside Iowa must submit a plan.

Pork producers with specific questions on completing or submitting manure management plans can contact the Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC) at (800) 808-7675 for referral to Iowa State University specialists. IPIC also will provide names, addresses and phone numbers of local private consultants who can assist producers in developing manure management plans that meet DNR rules. Producers will need to personally contact the consultants for fee schedules and other services.

Appropriate forms for filing manure management plans are available from the Iowa Pork Producers Association by calling (800) 372-7675 or from regional DNR offices in Atlantic, Des Moines, Manchester, Mason City, Spencer and Washington. Forms also are available on the DNR Web site at this URL: <http://www.state.ia.us/epd/wastewtr/feedlot/manure.htm>
