10/19/99 Contacts: Project Will Track Production and Cost Efficiencies in Swine Finishing Systems AMES, Iowa -- Pork producers who want to know how their operations fare when compared with others in terms of production costs and efficiency are invited to participate in a new demonstration project sponsored by the Iowa Pork Industry Center (IPIC) and Iowa State University Extension. ISU Extension livestock field specialists Jerry Weiss, Dave Stender, Dennis DeWitt and Terry Steinhart are part of an overall effort to track producer effort and other inputs from a variety of management and operational types. The program, informally known as a cost of production/production efficiency demonstration, is offered at no charge to producers. "The objective of the project is to demonstrate production efficiency and cost differences between various facilities and management types," said Darci Cox, IPIC research associate. "All we ask is your time to keep track of production inputs using forms provided by your field specialist." The initial portion of this program will end June 30, 2000, but Cox said the project will likely continue past that date. "We hope to have a good start on our data collection and compilation by early next year, and plan to build on those first results as time goes on," she said. "Major funding for this program is being provided by the Iowa Pork Industry Center at Iowa State University, along with support from ISU Extension." All program participants will remain anonymous and summaries of the compiled data will be reported with no identification. Participants will receive a summary and compilation of the data from all participants. Results will be published in the ISU Swine Research Report. For more information about the program, contact Cox at (800) 808-7675. ml: isufarm |
