10/15/99 Contacts: Winter Sheep ICN Program Starts Nov. 16 AMES, Iowa -- The 1999-2000 Winter Sheep Iowa Communications Network (ICN) program begins on Nov. 16, 1999, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Kris Kohl, Iowa State University Extension agricultural engineering field specialist, will present a program on composting fallen animals. This unique, self-contained composting system is extremely effective for handling fallen animals in an environmentally friendly manner. This system can be used during the winter lambing season with minimal costs. The second half of the program will focus on the development of production alliances. Darrell Busby, ISU Extension field livestock specialist, and Jerry Sorenson, Precision Beef Alliance, will discuss how to start an alliance as well as with the advantages and disadvantages of being a member of an alliance. Twenty-five sites throughout the state will be connected for easy access by attendees via the ICN. A full program brochure and list of sites are available from ISU Extension county offices. This program is sponsored by Iowa State University and the Iowa Sheep and Wool Promotion Board. There is no registration fee for this program. Future sheep ICN programs are scheduled for Dec. 14 and Jan. 11. For more information, contact Dan Morrical, ISU Extension sheep specialist, at (515) 294-0847 or e-mail at morrical@iastate.edu.
