10/12/99 Contacts: Central Region Woodland Stewardship Conference Scheduled AMES, Iowa--Southwest Iowa forest landowners interested in learning how to better manage their forested land are encouraged to attend the 1999 Central Region Woodland Stewardship Conference scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 20, at the Lied Conference Center, Arbor Day Farm, Nebraska City, Neb. The conference begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. "Studies indicate that most landowners have more than one objective for their woodland acreage and often the primary objective is not timber management," said Paul Wray, Iowa State University Extension forestry specialist and conference committee member. "The conference has been designed with this thought in mind." Because of landowners' diverse interests, the conference offers a variety of programs designed to help make them better stewards of the natural resources found on their property. For landowners interested in growing timber as a crop, part of the conference focuses on management aspects to improve the woodland resource and the economic returns from products grown and harvested from existing woodland or a forest plantation. Topics in this area include marketing timber, improving woodlands for timber production, using seeds to establish woodlands and how to identify and work with woodland goals and objectives. For landowners with non-timber interests, the conference will include presentations on tree identification, establishing and maintaining prairies, improving wildlife habitat and development of windbreaks for farms and acreages. For landowners interested in possible ways to diversify their income, the conference features presentations on Christmas tree production, nut tree culture, specialty products from woodlands and milling lumber for home and farm use. The conference registration fee is $25 per person and includes a continental breakfast and a luncheon. Landowners interested in attending the conference must register by Nov. 15. A conference brochure, which includes a registration form, is available from ISU Extension, Soil and Water Conservation, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Department of Natural Resources field offices or by contacting Paul Wray, 253 Bessey Hall, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011 (515) 294-1168; e-mail (phw@iastate.edu). The conference is co-sponsored by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Kansas Forest Service, Missouri Department of Conservation, Nebraska Forest Service, and Cooperative Extension from Iowa State University, Kansas State University, University of Missouri and the University of Nebraska. ml: isuex4 |
