10/12/99 Contacts: Tri-State Forestry Conference Scheduled AMES, Iowa--Southeast Iowa forest landowners interested in learning how to better manage their forested land are encouraged to attend the Tri-State Forest Steward Conference scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 13 at the Quincy Holiday Inn in Quincy, Ill. The conference begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 4:45 p.m. "Studies indicate that most landowners have more than one objective for their woodland acreage and often the primary objective is not timber management," said Paul Wray, Iowa State University Extension forestry specialist and conference committee member. "The conference has been designed with this thought in mind." Because of landowners' diverse interests, the conference offers a variety of programs designed to help make them better stewards of the natural resources found on their property. For landowners interested in growing timber as a crop, part of the conference will focus on management aspects to improve the woodland resource and the economic returns from products grown and harvested from existing woodland or a forest plantation. Topics in this area include growing high value timber species, conducting a successful timber sale and processing wood products from a woodland. For landowners with non-timber interests, the conference includes presentations on tree identification, woodland wildflower identification and propagation, tree pruning techniques, tree planting, exotics species invading native woodlands, riparian forest buffers and government cost-share programs for forest landowners. For landowners interested in possible ways to diversify their income, the conference features presentations on agroforestry (or multicropping), nut tree culture, collecting tree seed for income and leased hunting opportunities. The conference registration fee is $25 per person and includes a continental breakfast and a luncheon. Landowners interested in attending the conference must register by Nov. 1. A conference brochure, which includes a registration form, is available from ISU Extension, Soil and Water Conservation, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Department of Natural Resources field offices or by contacting Judy Stoll, c/o Tri-State Forest Stewardship Conference, W-503 Turner Hall, 1102 S. Goodwin Ave., Urbana, IL 61801, (217) 333-3650. The conference is co-sponsored by the Illinois, Iowa and Missouri Extension Services; the Illinois and Iowa Department of Natural Resources; the Missouri Department of Conservation; the Natural Resources Conservation Service in Illinois, Iowa and Missouri; the Department of Forestry at Iowa State University; the University of Missouri School of Natural Resources; and the University of Illinois Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences. ml: isuex7 |
