Dec. 1 Program Offers Information For Pork Producers

FORT DODGE, Iowa - Pork producers in north central Iowa are invited to attend the program, "Pork Issues 2000." The Dec. 1 event begins at 3:30 p.m. with registration and will adjourn about 9 p.m. It will be held at the Starlite Village in Fort Dodge, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 169 and Iowa Highway 7. Program sponsors are Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and the Iowa Pork Industry Center.

Speakers are attorneys Steve Moline and Steve Reno in the farm division of the Iowa Attorney General's office, ISU agricultural economist Dermot Hayes, state executive Farm Service Agency director Bob Soukup, ISU Extension hotline coordinator Margaret Van Ginkel and ISU Extension director of Agriculture and Natural Resources Wendy Wintersteen. Governor Tom Vilsack also has been invited to speak.

Moline and Reno will discuss legal issues regarding contracts, including what producers should read and sign. Hayes will present information on the role independent producers play in today's world. Soukup will speak on farm programs for swine producers. Van Ginkel will offer information on the Iowa Concern Hotline and how to make sure families remain a part of all operations, and Wintersteen will explain how ISU Extension is partnering with pork producers to help provide educational, informational and financial programming.

Cost for those who preregister by noon, Nov. 29, is $15 each or $25 per couple. The fee at the door is $20 per person. The fee includes a pork loin and ham dinner buffet. For more information or to preregister, contact the Webster County ISU Extension office at (515) 576-2119.
