5/13/99 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contacts: Youth and Family Camp Features Agriculture, Environment, Community Activities AMES, Iowa -- The 1999 fifth anniversary Youth and Family Camp will run from 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 4, to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at the YMCA Camp, located north of Boone. The camp is sponsored by Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI), the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, the Field to Family Community Food Project and the Iowa State University Extension Sustainable Agriculture Program. "This camp provides a unique opportunity for youth and their families to learn more about the relationships between food, farming, the environment and communities -- all through hands-on, outdoor activities. This will be the fifth year that youth and adults from farms and towns all over Iowa join together for this fun camp to share experiences," according to Shelly Gradwell, of the ISU Extension Sustainable Agriculture Program. "The camp is open to the first 50 youth and their families who register by May 20. Campers do not need to be PFI members or participate in a community supported agriculture (CSA) project. Children under 8 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Teen counselors 14 years of age and older attend free and receive a $20 stipend. Counselors and staff will arrive at 10:30 a.m. on June 3 for camp leadership training," Gradwell said. Activities will include hiking; horseback riding; history and turn-of-the-century programs; wildlife conservation; forest, creek, and field ecology; team-building games; climbing; rappelling; canoeing, swimming and fishing; a campfire cookout; music and storytelling; crafts and a project fair; a farm and garden field trip and family picnic. Cost is $50 per participant. Scholarships are available. To register, include names, ages, address, phone number, any special needs and a check payable to Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) and mail to Field to Family, 917 Burnett #3, Ames, IA 50010 by May 20. For more information call Shelly Gradwell at (515) 294-0887 or Nan Bonfils at (515) 294-8512. |
