5/4/99 Contacts: Commercial Manure Applicators Must Be Certified AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa Legislature has passed a law requiring commercial manure applicators to be certified by July 1. As a result, Iowa State University Extension is offering a series of certification workshops around the state. By attending a workshop and paying a certification fee to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), applicators will become certified, according to Angela Rieck-Hinz, ISU Extension program specialist. The other option to a workshop is to pass a written exam. A commercial manure applicator under Iowa law is "a person who engages in the business of and charges a fee for applying manure on the land of another person." During the three-hour workshop, which must be attended for the full length of time, participants will learn about: * handling, application and storage of manure in conformance with new laws and rules * the nutrient values of manure * the potential environmental impact of manure application * how to utilize plans for manure management, safety and emergencies * where to find technical assistance After the initial certification requirements are met, applicators may maintain their certification in following years by attending three hours of continuing instruction or taking an exam each year, according to Rieck-Hinz. In addition, the "Commercial Manure Applicator Certification Study Guide" (Pm-1778) will be available for $20. Guides may be purchased at ISU Extension county offices, or through Extension Distribution, Printing and Publications Building, Iowa State University, Ames, IA 50011-3171, (515) 294-5247. Applicants who choose not to attend the certification training, may become certified by passing a written exam administered by the DNR, according to Rieck-Hinz.
