7/21/99 Contacts: Seminar Focuses On Increasing Returns for Pork Producers AMES, Iowa -- Pork producers looking for ways to more effectively manage risk, increase returns and add value to their operations should attend the Iowa Pork Industry Center's (IPIC) upcoming seminar, "Finding Money in the Hog Market, $trategies for You." The program also is cosponsored by Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) and will take place Tuesday, Aug. 31 at the Scheman Building in the Iowa State Center in Ames. Speakers will address topics ranging from farm-to-retail chains of economic opportunity to developing marketing plans. John Lawrence, ISU Extension economist, will present information on the use of futures marketing strategies and lead a daylong marketing activity to help producers understand marketing terms, choices and consequences. Other speakers include Gary Malenke of Sioux-Preme Pack in Sioux Center, Kevin Maher of E-Markets in Ames and Jeff Ward of the National Pork Producers Council in Clive. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. The program begins at 9:30 a.m. and will end about 4 p.m. Included in the program are the noon meal, morning and afternoon refreshments and a copy of the proceedings. Attendance is free for those who preregister by Aug. 17. After that date, the cost is $10 per person.
