7/14/99 Contacts: Tree Stewards Complete Course AMES, Iowa--During summer 1999, 45 participants completed the Iowa Community Tree Steward Program in the Council Bluffs/Glenwood and Waverly/Waterloo areas. "The goal of the program is to develop a network of highly motivated, well-trained volunteers to expand and improve the community forests in Iowa," said Mark Vitosh, Iowa State University Extension program assistant in the Department of Forestry. "Those who completed the course will be contributing a minimum of 24 volunteer hours focused on improving and expanding community tree resources in their community or region." The program involves 24 hours of intensive training in community tree management. The program is divided into a series of four-hour sessions during a six-week period. Participants learned about basic tree identification, tree planting, tree care and maintenance, pest management, inventory techniques, program planning, funding and implementation. The program is sponsored by the USDA Forest Service. State cooperators in the program include the Iowa Urban and Community Forestry Council, Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Trees Forever. Since its development in 1992, the program has been presented 14 times to a total of 353 participants representing 115 communities from 60 counties in Iowa. The graduates of the program have donated more than 7,300 hours of community service in their local areas. The program will be presented in the Fort Dodge and Bettendorf/Clinton areas in the summer of 2000.
