Jan. 25 ICN Offers Financial Options to Pork Producers

AMES, Iowa -- Pork producers, lenders and other hog industry professionals are invited to participate in a Jan. 25 Iowa Communications Network (ICN) program. This program, the second in the "Management Information for Pork Producers" ICN series, focuses on debt restructuring, bankruptcy and liquidation issues and sociologic concerns related to the current state of the industry. It is sponsored by the Iowa Pork Industry Center, in cooperation with Iowa State University Extension and the Iowa Pork Producers Association.

The ICN program will be held at approximately 40 sites throughout the state from 7-9 p.m. It will originate from the ISU campus.

John Lawrence, ISU Extension agricultural economist, will provide a market update, overview of potential government programs and pertinent contract information. ISU Extension agricultural economist Bob Jolly's segment will deal with short term financial management choices, including the issue of debt. Paul Lasley, ISU Extension sociologist, will speak on the role of hope and social support in difficult times. A fourth part of the program will feature a videotape done by Neil Harl, ISU economist, which focuses on assessing one's personal situation, and the positive and negative aspects associated with financial options open to producers.

Approximately 30 minutes will be provided for questions following the speakers' presentations.

The program is free, but preregistration is advised. For more information, contact your local county ISU Extension office. The list of committed sites follows:
