Results In For 1998 Soybean Cyst Nematode Variety Trials

AMES, Iowa -- Soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is a serious pest of soybean in Iowa. Each year, Iowa State University conducts and evaluates variety trials of public and private soybean varieties bred for resistance to SCN. The variety tests assess the performance of SCN-resistant soybean varieties and the effects of the varieties on SCN population densities. This year's results are now available.

"Use of resistant soybean varieties is a very effective strategy for managing soybean cyst nematode, and numerous SCN-resistant soybean varieties are available," Greg Tylka, ISU Extension plant pathologist, said.

"The results of the experiments described in this report were consistent and dramatic. The data convincingly illustrate the benefits of utilizing SCN-resistant soybean varieties for management of this important soybean pest," Tylka said.

Most of the SCN-resistant soybean varieties had greater yields than susceptible varieties in fields infested with SCN, according to the report. In noninfested fields, the average yields of the resistant varieties were consistent with yields of the susceptible varieties evaluated; some even had greater yields than the highest performing susceptible varieties.

"The experiment results illustrate that SCN-resistant varieties can suppress SCN reproduction and provide increased soybean yields relative to using susceptible varieties," Tylka said.
