12/21/99 Contacts: Plant disease workshop in its 20th year at ISU AMES, IA -- A one-week workshop, "Practical Plant Pathology," will be offered Monday, February 21 through Friday, February 25 by the plant pathology department at Iowa State University in Ames. In its 20th year, this workshop provides intensive, practical experience in the science of plant disease in all fields of agriculture. The workshop is designed to help professionals better understand important diseases that attack today's field and horticultural crops. The one-credit workshop covers the major groups of disease-causing organisms--fungi, bacteria, viruses and nematodes. There's hands-on training and experience in isolating and identifying disease organisms, and recognizing a wide range of disease symptoms. The workshop includes practical knowledge in seed science, disease management, and diagnosis that can be used every day. Learn to recognize a wide range of plant disease symptoms, and exchange ideas with other professionals. The ISU workshop typically attracts research technicians, crop consultants, extension educators, seed and agrichemical industry specialists, and farmers who want to gain a working understanding of plant diseases or want to update past training. Practical Plant Pathology is team-taught by faculty and staff of the ISU Department of Plant Pathology. The faculty wants to cover crops and commodities of particular interest to those who enroll. Call Jeslyn at Iowa State University Extended and Continuing Education, (800) 262-0015, to let the instructors know what topics you want discussed. The Practical Plant Pathology workshop is a one-credit course, but no tests are given. The admission requirements are a high school diploma, plus college-level biology or equivalent work experience. Take the workshop for undergraduate credit (for those without a bachelor's degree) for $117 or for graduate credit, $184. An additional $50 materials fee covers the cost of a large course notebook.
