12/13/99 Contacts: 4-H Enthusiasts Plan Conference for Volunteer Leaders From 12 States and Canada AMES, Iowa -- Two Iowa 4-H volunteers have been selected to serve as co-chairs for the North Central Region Volunteer Forum, a conference of 4-H and other youth education volunteers from 12 states and Canada. The two co-chairs, Kathy Tabke from Moville and Diana Cox from Iowa City, have been selected to lead the team of volunteers planning the conference. Tabke and Cox were selected based on recommendations from 4-H volunteers and state 4-H staff, said Chuck Morris, associate director of Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. Iowa hosts the forum in Des Moines on November 8 - 16, 2001. Delegates will interact with other volunteers while learning how to enhance their personal leadership skills and expand their volunteer abilities. Diana Cox, a forum veteran from Johnson County, said the conference is a great resource and she always returns with a renewed sense of accomplishment. "Forum is a great resource for volunteers. You obtain information and ideas that can be taken back for use in your club. Additionally, each attendee is charged to use what they learn to train other leaders locally or at the state level. It is a great way to network and for leaders to share their ideas or resolve concerns," Cox said. Kathy Tabke, the co-chair from Woodbury County, said the conference is a great opportunity for all volunteers, adult and youth, involved in youth education. "Delegates will have the opportunity to become better leaders. They will be able to 'get away' for a couple of days and socialize with other people that share their passion," Tabke said. More information about volunteering in 4-H is available at local county ISU Extension offices or by contacting Chris Gleason, the 4-H volunteer development assistant at (515) 294-1557. mr |
