8/11/99 Contacts: Students Grow Curiosity with Growing in the Garden Gardens will be on display during the Iowa State Fair Aug. 12-22 to announce a new curriculum, Growing in the Garden, on agriculture and natural resources for students in kindergarten to third grade. Janet Anderson, Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development program specialist, will be conducting programs about the curriculum at the garden outside of the Agriculture Building on Aug. 17 and 19 from 1-2 p.m. At the fair, children can visit the salsa and herb garden and the butterfly garden by the Agriculture Building or play the salsa game at the 4-H Exhibits Building. The activities are all part of the Growing in the Garden curriculum, developed by Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development staff, curriculum directors, teachers, horticulture experts and gardeners. "The goal of the curriculum is to grow curiosity about food, fiber and environmental sciences," Anderson said. The curriculum consists of 10 indoor and outdoor lessons for each of the K-3 grades. Each lesson teaches about gardening while incorporating science, social studies, math, music, health, history and language arts. Growing in the Garden was developed after extensive research was conducted in 1997-98. It was designed specifically to fit standards and benchmarks for many Iowa schools.
