8/6/99 Contacts: __(Name)__ Finishes City Clerk Professional Training __(Name)__, __(Town)__, completed the final session of a three-part curriculum in city management recently at Iowa State University. The five-day program was conducted by ISU Extension July 12-16 in Ames. Advanced topics offered in this session included performance appraisal, negotiation skills for public officials, coping with controversy, community design and landscape design and fire and emergency services. The participants also were introduced to the basics of a personnel system and spent several sessions on understanding municipal law. One day of the session was devoted to verbal communication techniques and a public speaking exercise. The program is conducted by ISU Extension faculty with assistance from other cooperating agencies. The Iowa program is among the largest of 33 such programs offered nationwide. This year's session was the final part of a continuing three-year series of programs offered by ISU Extension to all city clerks. Many Iowa municipalities require participation in the program as a condition of employment for newly hired clerks. Participants who have completed the program are invited back each year to participate in continuing education on a variety of special topics.
