1,000th Money 2000(tm) Enrollee Wins Bond

EARLY, Iowa--Gloria Rohlfsen will get a little extra help with her financial goals through Iowa State University Extension's Money 2000(tm) effort. Rohlfsen will receive a $100 savings bond from ISU Extension for being the 1,000th person to enroll in Money 2000(tm).

Rohlfsen teaches third grade, and her husband, Bob, works at the local grain elevator. They are in their 50s and have three daughters: two in college and one recently graduated.

"These are rather heavy duty financial years for us because of college," she said. "We're both wage earners. The economy is tight right now in rural areas.

"Our girls received financial aid, but it's still very much of an investment," she said. "And with retirement just around the corner, we need to come up with some kind of plan."

Money 2000(tm) is designed to help individuals or households increase their savings and/or reduce their debt through the year 2000. Participants set their own goals. Those who enroll receive goal-setting information, a subscription to a quarterly newsletter and information about additional extension resources at no charge. Participants periodically report their progress. The information is confidential.

With more than 1,000 Iowans enrolled, the combined savings and debt reduction goals reach more than $4 million. Nationally, Money 2000(tm) has helped at least 7,000 people in more than 30 states increase their net worth.

Rohlfsen and her husband make their financial decisions together and work from a budget. "I like to be on top of things," she said. "I want to know what's going on and where we're headed."

The Rohlfsens are interested in financial planning information and hope to learn more about it through Money 2000(tm). "We'd like to accomplish more with our money than in the past," she said. "We want to come up with some kind of action plan to accomplish that. That's why I signed up."
