IOWA 4-H'ERS OBSERVE NATIONAL 4-H WEEK, OCT. 4-10

During National 4-H Week, Oct. 4-10, youth celebrate 4-H in their clubs and communities by telling the 4-H story to others. "4-H is a program based on setting goals and striving to reach them. It is a hands-on experience. Members select project areas and then take control of their projects. The skills they learn are useful throughout life," said Joe Kurth, director, Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development.

National 4-H Week allows Iowa's nearly 120,000 4-H'ers to tell others how they learn and have fun in 4-H. 4-H'ers put displays in store windows and shopping malls, speak to community groups and service clubs, hang banners and serve as guests and hosts on local radio programs. Some county newspapers and local radio stations do a special 4-H edition or program, Kurth said.

Youth can participate in 4-H in several ways: in community clubs, which focus on all 4-H project areas; in project clubs, which focus on specified projects; in special interest groups, which also focus on one topic but in a shorter period of time; in school enrichment programs, which use 4-H materials as part of the curriculum; and in specially funded groups that benefit from federal funds. In addition, 4-H camps are open to everyone.

Any child in grades four through 12 can join 4-H. To enroll your child in 4-H or for more information, call the Iowa State University Extension county office.
