MAGAZINE EDITOR HONORED WITH STATE 4-H ALUMNI RECOGNITION

AMES, Iowa -- Loren Kruse, editor-in-chief of Successful Farming, Corn Farmer and Soybean Grower magazines, received the state 4-H alumni recognition award at the Iowa 4-H Recognition Banquet on Sept. 5.

The honor is the highest award presented to adults who are former 4-H'ers, said Shirley Stakey, program specialist for Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. Kruse, of Ankeny, was recognized by ISU Extension for his accomplishments and dedication to the 4-H program. He is known for his community, public service and career success as well as outstanding service to 4-H.

Kruse used his leadership skills as a youth in Grundy County 4-H. One of his favorite memories of 4-H was participating in the communication program at the Iowa State Fair. That single experience still continues to impact his life as he speaks throughout the United States.

He earned a M.S. in rural adult education from Oklahoma State University and two B.S. degrees in technical journalism and agricultural economics from Kansas State University. As a professional he has earned numerous honors that recognize excellence in communication and visionary leadership in agriculture.

Kruse currently serves as the chair of the strategic planning committee of the Iowa 4-H Education and Natural Resources Center, is vice president of the Fellowship of Christian Farmers, vice chairman of the Living History Farms board and president of the Educational Foundation of the national Alpha Gamma Rho Agricultural Fraternity.

He served on the board of the Iowa 4-H Foundation for seven years, including chair of the corporate committee and president. He also served on the "Imagine Together" Capital Campaign, which successfully raised $2.5 million for Iowa 4-H'ers.

The magazine Kruse edits, Successful Farming, is a major sponsor of the annual 4-H Golf Tournament. Successful Farming also has carried two features about the Iowa 4-H Cookbook, which has resulted in numerous sales. Successful Farming articles often feature 4-H programs.

"Loren's work and his life exemplify the 4-H pledge," says Florine Swanson, executive director of the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

Kruse and his wife own and manage a crop, livestock and Christmas tree farm in Grundy County.
