PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GOOD FOR OLDER ADULTS

AMES, Iowa--Although physical activity is valuable for everyone, it is more valuable for those over the age 60 than any other group in the population, says Elisabeth Schafer, Iowa State University Extension nutritionist.

"We've long known the value of exercise for all ages," says Schafer. "A recent study by Tufts University showed that the most significant signs of aging are the accumulation of inactivity and poor nutrition, and that the growing loss of independence is not because of chronic disease or cognitive impairment, but is due to the loss of muscle because of profound lack of physical activity."

The study involved 100 residents of a Boston nursing home, many of whom were frail and required assistance. Participants were divided into four groups: (1) exercise; (2) exercise plus one can of Ensure(tm) per day; (3) Ensure(tm) alone; and (4) control.

Results of the study showed a significant gain in leg strength, increased gait speed, balance, ability to climb stairs, increased spontaneous activity and fewer depressive symptoms in groups one and two. The participants also reported increased and brighter outlooks because they no longer had to ring for the nurse at night to help them go to the bathroom.

"As the numbers of Iowans aged 65 and older continue to rise, these kinds of studies are more and more relevant," says Schafer. "Over 16 percent of Iowans will be age 65 or older by 2000, one of the highest proportions in the U.S."

"With the onset of age, tissue starts to deteriorate. By maintaining muscle mass, older adults can maintain their overall strength," says Scott McLean, ISU health and human performance associate professor.
