GETS FACTS ABOUT LIQUID SUPPLEMENTS

AMES, Iowa--In today's health--conscious world, everyone is looking for a way to get fit. Advertisers are even promoting liquid supplements for people on the go and for older adults.

"Liquid supplements were originally created for patients with special needs in hospitals and nursing homes," says Elisabeth Schafer, Iowa State University Extension nutritionist.

Today companies claim the supplements are for people who are looking for nutrition "insurance," are too busy to eat right, trying to lose weight, have difficulty preparing meals or a poor appetite, have difficulty chewing or swallowing, or are recovering from illness.

A new fact sheet by ISU Extension helps consumers evaluate these claims as well as their own individual needs for liquid supplements.

"We want to help consumers distinguish between fact and myth when it comes to liquid supplements," says Schafer.

Copies of Nutrition in a Can -- Liquid Supplements are available free from ISU Extension county offices and from the ISU Extension publication web site at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/Pages/families/nutritio.html.
