9/21/98 Contacts: ICN PROGRAM COVERS NEW IOWA MANURE LAWS, IMPLICATIONS OF USDA REPORT AMES, Iowa --At an Iowa Communications Network program Oct. 1, the state's pork producers can learn about economic and production aspects of their profession. The Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa State University Extension are sponsoring the program, which runs from 8-9:30 p.m. at 15 sites across the state. It is part of an ongoing series of programs offered over ICN to follow up the quarterly USDA Hogs and Pigs Report. In the first portion of the program, ISU Extension agricultural economist John Lawrence will discuss figures from the Sept. 25 USDA report, and possible implications for Iowa producers. Breeding herd size, slaughter rate and farrowing numbers are among the factors influencing current and future market prices, and producers can see how their operations fit into the overall picture. The second part of the program will focus on new Iowa laws concerning manure management plan requirements and manure applicator certification. ISU Extension agricultural engineer Jeff Lorimor will describe the new rules and how they affect producers. The program is free. For more information, producers should contact their county ISU Extension office.
