9/21/98 Contacts: SHEEP PRODUCER OUTREACH GOES HIGH TECH AMES, Iowa -- The winter educational program conducted by Iowa State University Extension and supported by the Iowa Sheep and Wool Promotion Board will use the Iowa Communications Network (ICN). Four programs are scheduled to be held once a month starting with the first session on Nov. 3. Additional programs will be conducted on Dec. 8, Jan. 12 and Feb. 9. Programs will originate from the ISU campus and broadcast to more than 20 locations throughout the state. The programs will start at 7 p.m. and conclude at 9:30 p.m. Brochures with program speakers, topics and locations are available after Oct. 10 at ISU County Extension offices and from field livestock specialists. Kreg Leymaster from the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (MARC) will be the presenter on Nov. 3. MARC currently runs 3,000 ewes on various genetic research efforts that are coordinated by Leymaster. Lambing time management along with flock health programs also will be covered. Dan Morrical, ISU Sheep Extension Specialist, will discuss the importance of nutrition on Feb. 9. Specific topics will include understanding nutrient requirements, balancing rations and evaluating feed costs. Sheep producers should attend these programs to hear leading authorities on various aspects of sheep production. There is no registration fee as ICN charges are supported by a grant from ISWPB.
