Dec. 10 ICN Program Educates Producers on PQA
AMES, Iowa -- A statewide ICN program on Dec. 10 will provide Iowa pork producers with the opportunity to learn more about the verification process for the Pork Quality Assurance program. As of Jan. 1, 1999, three of the state's packers will accept hogs only from producers who are PQA level III verified. Farmland has already enacted a Sept. 1, 1998, deadline and Hormel and Swift will join that rank the first of the year. Through this ICN program, producers will learn about PQA and how the verification process works. The program will run from 7-9 pm.
Iowa State University Extension swine veterinarian James McKean will describe the process, and offer suggestions on how to meet the requirements, including legal obligations and site-specific options for producers. McKean is also associate director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center, which is joining with ISU Extension and the Iowa Pork Producers Association to offer this ICN session.
Each producer who attends will receive written confirmation of his or her attendance at this educational session. Producers will give this letter to their veterinary practitioners as part of the PQA verification process.
There is no cost to attend and no preregistration is necessary. For more information on local sites, producers should contact their local county ISU Extension office.
