ICN Looks at Market, Mediation

AMES, Iowa -- Iowa pork producers are invited to attend an Iowa Communications Network program in early January which will focus on two aspects of today's individual operations. The Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa State University have teamed up to provide information and perspective on the latest market numbers and on ways to deal with the economic and emotional issues accompanying this current trend of record low prices.

The ICN program will be held at more than 40 sites throughout the state on Jan. 7, 1999, from 8-9:30 p.m. It will originate from the ISU campus and features ISU Extension economist John Lawrence and John Baker, program specialist with the Iowa Concern Hotline.

Lawrence will address producer concerns on expected hog industry price trends, implications of the latest USDA numbers from the Dec. 29, 1998, report and possible expectations of future slaughter numbers. Baker, who is also an attorney, will present information on mediation, dealing with stresses involved in today's pork production operations, and the types of records and other documents producers should assemble before meeting with lenders.
