12/30/98 Contacts: ICN Program Explains New Rules For Handling Food AMES, Iowa - Food service operators and owners are encouraged to attend a Jan. 12 meeting to learn about new food safety regulations. "Iowa has recognized that the best defense against a potential threat of foodborne disease and illness is the uniform use of a scientifically-based regulatory program," says Jim Huss, Iowa State University Extension specialist in the department of hotel, restaurant, and institution management. "The 1997 Model Food Code takes effect Jan. 1, 1999, and provides food safety advice for managers, food preparers, and servers in retail food establishments, including grocery stores and restaurants." To help explain the new rules, the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals (DIA) in partnership with Iowa State University Extension, will broadcast a two-hour telecast on the Iowa Communications Network beginning at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 12. The program is free and no pre-registration is necessary; but space is limited so participants will be seated on a first-come basis. Co-sponsors are the Iowa Hospitality Association and the Iowa Grocery Industry Association. Individuals who want a copy of the 1997 Food Code as adopted by Iowa, should contact their local food inspection agency, or the Department of Inspections and Appeals' Inspections Division at (515) 281-6538. Des Moines-area food service operators and owners will have another opportunity to attend on-site classes at a later date. The following ICN sites will have the January 12 program.
