Three New Iowa 4-H Scholarships Available For Students

Three new Iowa 4-H scholarships totaling $3,000 are available for undergraduate students attending Iowa State University, University of Northern Iowa and University of Iowa starting in fall 1999. This is the first year these three scholarships are being offered.

The first of the three scholarships is the Goering Communication 4-H Scholarship. This $500 scholarship is available for a freshman entering ISU, UNI or U of I in fall 1999 pursuing a four-year degree in any field of study. The recipient must have participated in the 4-H communication project or program to be eligible.

The Persinger-Asmus Family 4-H Scholarship is available for any sophomore, junior or senior attending ISU or UNI starting in fall 1999. This $500 scholarship is for any field of study other than agriculture or family and consumer sciences. The applicant must demonstrate leadership, citizenship and/or communication skills in 4-H and college activities.

The third new scholarship is the Ralph and Agnes Dostal Memorial Scholarship. This $2,000 scholarship is for any undergraduate attending ISU in fall 1999 pursuing any field of study. Requirements are that the applicant demonstrates community service and participation in 4-H.

"The 4-H scholarship program provides recognition to 4-H'ers who have displayed leadership through involvement with 4-H, school and community activities," said Shirley Stakey, program specialist for
4-H Youth Development with ISU Extension. "Donors recognize 4-H'ers' incentive to gain higher education, and they support and encourage 4-H'ers through scholarships."

In 1999, the total number of 4-H scholarships available will be 63 for a combined total of $42,250. This is 13 more scholarships than last year. In addition to the new scholarships, Pioneer Hi-Bred International has expanded their support to offer 20 Pioneer Community College 4-H Scholarships.

Applications are due to the State 4-H Youth Development Office by February 1, 1999. Application forms and information about 4-H scholarships are available at any county office of ISU Extension. Or call Stakey at (515) 294-1531. Extension programs are open to all without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age or disability.
