New Clubs, More Coordination Grow 4-H in Region 10, Fischer Says
AMES, Iowa – New clubs and more coordination among counties are growing the 4-H Youth Development Program in Iowa State University Extension’s Region 10, according to director Linda Fischer. Region 10 includes Benton, Jones and Linn counties.

“We have 12 new special project clubs and they range from a high school language arts teacher wanting to do a language arts club, to seven ladies interested in teaching 4-H’ers to quilt, so we have a quilting club,” Fischer said.
In Marion, a new club will study historical gardens and then plant and maintain a garden at a local historical house. Another club will be establishing a community garden. A FIRST LEGO League club is being targeted for high school 4-H’ers. The leader of that club is a former 4-H’er who now is an engineer at Rockwell Collins, which is helping fund the club. 4-H shooting sports clubs also are in the works.
The region’s county youth coordinators and program coordinators have been meeting together monthly to develop efforts among the counties, Fischer said. The 4-H livestock committees have met and will be sharing resources for livestock judging clubs.
Fischer is one of 20 regional extension education directors. The positions were created a year ago as part of ISU Extension’s restructuring plan to facilitate an issue-based approach to delivering ISU Extension programming and resources. Fischer works directly with county extension council members to meet their legal obligations as an elected body. Together they are identifying new ways to work across county borders, provide educational programming that addresses significant issues and evaluate the results of multi-county and regional efforts.
