New 4-H Clubs, Local Foods Generate Enthusiasm in Region 8, Wrage Says
AMES, Iowa -- New 4-H clubs, as well as a growing interest in local foods, are generating enthusiasm in Iowa State University Extension’s Region 8, according to director Richard Wrage. The region includes Boone, Hardin, Marshall and Story counties.

A number of 4-H clubs focusing on special interests have been established in the last six to eight months, Wrage said. Several clubs revolve around companion pets and companion pet therapy. In these clubs, 4-H’ers share their pets with Iowans in convalescent homes and other care centers and help them experience how pets can improve their situation. A technology club explores anything related to technology, from robotics to cell phones or computers. A culture club explores cultures in Iowa and around the world. Other clubs center on fishing or shooting sports.
Economic development in the region includes a serious effort with local foods, Wrage continued. “If we can get more local foods produced, and more local foods consumed, and turn over that dollar locally, that is economic development as well as sustainable farming. It involves the environment, it involves jobs.”
Wrage is one of 20 regional extension education directors. The positions were created a year ago as part of ISU Extension’s restructuring plan to facilitate an issue-based approach to delivering ISU Extension programming and resources. Wrage works directly with county extension council members to meet their legal obligations as an elected body. Together they are identifying new ways to work across county borders, provide educational programming that addresses significant issues and evaluate the results of multi-county and regional efforts.
