ISU Extension Workshops to Offer 2010 Strategies for Cow-Calf Management

AMES, Iowa---Iowa State University Extension has scheduled Cow-Calf Management Workshops: 2010 Strategies at two locations. Kinfolks Restaurant in Attica (south of Knoxville) has been selected as the location for the May 18 evening workshop; on the evening of May 19 the workshop will be at the Pizza Ranch in Creston. Extension specialists and an agribusiness scientist are on the agenda that begins with a 6:30 p.m. meal.

Workshop presenter Rick Rasby, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension beef specialist, will discuss beef cow management that includes heifer development strategies to keep young cows in the herd. "Cow-calf producers and professionals that work with livestock producers will be interested in Rasby’s research findings," said Joe Sellers, ISU Extension beef specialist. "Some of his research will be a shift in traditional thinking about heifer development. We are very pleased to offer producers a chance to hear him."

In addition to Rasby, Sellers will cover beef cow nutrition challenges and Byron Sleugh, Dow AgroSciences range and pasture management specialist, will provide information on pasture weed and brush management.

“After a few hours and a good meal, beef producers can walk away with some new strategies for their cow-calf herds,” said Sellers. “Sponsorship allows us to offer the workshop and meal for a minimal fee.”

The $5 fee is payable at the door and includes the meal. However, those planning to attend are asked to pre-register by May 17 to provide an accurate meal count. To pre-register for the Attica workshop, contact the Marion County ISU Extension office at (641) 842-2014; to pre-register for the Creston workshop, contact the Union County ISU Extension office at (641) 782-8426.

Workshop sponsors include the Iowa Beef Center, Iowa State University, Iowa Forage and Grasslands Council, Dow AgroSciences, ISU Extension — Marion County, ISU Extension — Union County, Iowa State Savings Bank — Knoxville and South Central Iowa Area Partnership.
