Boone County 4-H’er Earns Communication Project Award
AMES, Iowa – Kelsey Westrum of Boone County received a state 4-H communication project award that includes a $100 savings bond from the Mary Jo and Glen Mente Endowment and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Westrum, 17, is the daughter of Dirk and Lori Westrum of Stratford.
During her nine years in 4-H, Westrum has earned county and state fair recognition for several working exhibits and served as student director of her high school’s T.V. program. Her involvement with working exhibits has helped her decide on a future career path
“The many working exhibits I have done helped me decide I want to be an elementary school teacher,” the current senior at Webster City High School said. “I have also learned that communication is the key to everything. Educating youth is fun, and I look forward to it in my future years.”
In addition to communications, Westrum has been involved in the photography and citizenship project areas while earning gold awards for swine, food and nutrition and clothing projects at the local level. She has received the achievement and outstanding sixer and freshman awards, served as club president and vice president, been a member of her county 4-H council and attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.
“4-H has helped my self-confidence. It has also helped me with my presentation skills and interviewing,” she said. “I have learned to communicate with all ages of people, and I feel that 4-H has prepared me for scholarship as well as job interviews.”
