Adair County 4-H’er Earns Food and Nutrition Project Award
AMES, Iowa – Gina Wallace of Adair County received a state 4-H food and nutrition project award that includes a $100 savings bond from the Mary Jo and Glen Mente Endowment and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Wallace, 17, is the daughter of David and Connie Wallace of Greenfield.
During her nine years of 4-H, Wallace has received a blue ribbon for a food and nutrition project at the state fair and the food and nutrition award in her county. She also has taught first through third graders about the food pyramid and Clover Kids about reading nutrition facts on food labels to look for whole grains.
“I’ve learned so much from basic measuring skills to necessary hygiene and food safety to decorating cakes,” she said. “I’ve also learned about good nutrition and how to keep fit. I hope to use the learned skills in the future by preparing healthy and tasty food for family and friends.”
In addition to food and nutrition, Wallace has been involved in the home improvement, rabbit and horse project areas while modeling in the clothing selection competition and receiving a seal of merit for a working exhibit, both at the state fair. She has also served as club president and a member of her county 4-H council and has attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.
“4-H has given me confidence in myself and taught me leadership skills that I will use for the rest of my life. My favorite project, food and nutrition, will also benefit me in the future because I’m considering majoring in dietetics in college,” the current senior at Nodaway Valley High School said.
