AMES, Iowa – Michelle Stewart of Bremer County received a state 4-H communication project award that includes a $100 savings bond from the Mary Jo and Glen Mente Endowment and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Stewart, 18, is the daughter of Doug and Janeen Stewart of Waverly.
During her nine years in 4-H, Stewart has given numerous educational presentations at the state fair and won the Wilma Beam Outstanding Communication and Personal Development awards at the local level.
“I have gained valuable skills and learned how to share my knowledge through 4-H, school, church and community service activities,” she said. “4-H has also influenced my decision to major in communications and environmental studies.”
In addition to communications, Stewart has been involved in the leadership and citizenship project areas and has been awarded state fair honors for swine and clothing selection projects. She has received leadership, senior achievement, citizenship and senior agricultural and natural resources awards at the local level while serving as club vice president. A county 4-H council member, Stewart has attended the Iowa 4-H Conference.
“4-H has helped me develop valuable communication skills, confidence, the ability to work with others and the desire to excel in everything I do. It has also taught me about responsibility for the world and environment,” she said. “Through 4-H I have come to understand how one person can make a difference in the lives of others.”
A current freshman at Central College, Stewart is majoring in communications and environmental studies and is currently active in the Emerging Leaders Program, “The Ray” Newspaper Staff and SUSTAIN.
