AMES, Iowa – Brent Sexton of Calhoun County received a state 4-H sheep project award that includes a $100 savings bond from the Mary Jo and Glen Mente Endowment and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Sexton, 17, is the son of Keith and Barb Sexton of Rockwell City.
During his eight years in 4-H, Sexton has planned, conducted and evaluated two county-wide livestock and small-animal fitting workshops that included five different animals, a veterinarian, door prizes and refreshments. He also demonstrated how to clip, fit and show a lamb and has served as a mentor to younger 4-H members.
“I’ve learned that I really enjoy learning about and working with a variety of livestock species,” he said. “This interest has had a direct impact on my educational and career goals. I plan to major in animal science and genetics and become a large animal veterinarian.”
In addition to sheep, Sexton has been involved in the leadership, citizenship, communications and veterinary science project areas while receiving a state 4-H horticulture project award in 2007. He has also received top junior, intermediate and senior 4-H’er awards at the local level and has served as club president and vice president and on his county, area and state 4-H councils.
“4-H has provided me with an opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills I will use my entire life, and it has helped me gain confidence to speak in front of large and small audiences,” he said. “In addition, I have learned to apply good time management and recordkeeping skills through my participation in the sheep project.”
Sexton is currently a senior at Rockwell City Lytton.
