Woodbury County 4-H’er Earns Communication Project Award
AMES, Iowa – Drew Schramm of Woodbury County received a state 4-H communication project award that includes a $100 savings bond from the Mary Jo and Glen Mente Endowment and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Schramm, 16, is the son of David and Gwyn Schramm of Moville.
During his eight years in 4-H, Schramm has received a state fair seal of excellence in extemporaneous speaking and grand champion honors at the county fair. He also organized a “Farm to School” day at Woodbury Central Elementary where he and other 4-H’ers taught 250 kids about poultry, beef, swine, sheep and rabbits.
“I kicked off the experience in the classroom by asking the kids questions to find out their knowledge, and I told them what to expect when they saw the exhibits as well as how to act around the animals,” he said. “I learned that if you take the time to teach kids they will listen and learn.”
In addition to communications, Schramm has been involved in the beef and poultry project areas while receiving blue ribbons for food and nutrition and home improvement projects at the state level and numerous project awards at the local and area levels. A county and state 4-H council member, Schramm has served as club president and vice president and a county recognition team member.
“4-H has helped me become a well-rounded individual. I can now raise animals, refinish furniture, teach kids about 4-H and bake a pie in the same day,” the current junior at Woodbury Central High School said.
