AMES, Iowa – Maddi Friedrich of Howard County received a state 4-H leadership project award that includes a $100 savings bond from the Mary Jo and Glen Mente Endowment and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Friedrich, 18, is the daughter of Rod and Toni Friedrich of Alta Vista.
During her nine years in 4-H, Friedrich has served on her county, area and state 4-H councils and county youth committee. She also has led several projects including helping the Clover Kids make marshmallow shooters and ARENA, where she worked to improve the local Cresco saddle club arena by raising funds through grants and community support. With the funds, her group then built a wooden bridge for the horse trail class, five benches, a fire ring and a perennial garden around the saddle club sign.
“Through my experiences I have learned the life skills of setting goals, writing grants, budgeting time and finances, organizing fund raisers, recruiting workers, sending faxes, meeting deadlines and conflict resolution,” Friedrich said. “I have learned to focus on the positives, value relationships and how I can make a difference in my world.”
In addition, Friedrich has been involved in the citizenship, communication, horse and home improvement project areas and has received the “I Dare You” award at the local level. A National 4-H Congress delegate, she also has attended the Citizenship-Washington Focus and Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.
“4-H has impacted me greatly. I have grown to be a more confident leader, communicator and citizen giving back to my community. I see myself as always being a part of the 4-H program whether it be as a member, alumni or maybe a leader,” she said.
Friedrich is currently a senior at the Ivanhoe Christian Academy.
