AMES, Iowa – Kysa Bennett of Ida County received a state 4-H clothing project award that includes a $100 savings bond from the Mary Jo and Glen Mente Endowment and the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Bennett, 17, is the daughter of Kyle and Robin Bennett of Schaller.
During her eight years in 4-H, Bennett has won seven blue ribbons for clothing projects at the state fair and received the top senior fashion revue award at the local level. She also has been a participant in the state fashion revue and local clothing selection and $15 challenge contests.
Beyond involvement, however, Bennett has taken on leadership duties by becoming her county’s clothing superintendent the past two years. In that position, she has organized every aspect of the style show, worked with the extension office to keep the 4-H’ers informed and spent time asking for community donations for the decorations. She also volunteered to coordinate a sewing workshop for the junior 4-H’ers' lock-in.
“By being a recipient of this award, I feel that I have met one of my 4-H goals. I am proud to be able to pass on my sewing, leadership and life skills that I have learned to younger youth,” she said.
A county and area 4-H council member, Bennett has attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference and been involved in the photography, leadership, citizenship and communications project areas. She has served as president and vice president of her club and is currently a junior at Galva-Holstein High School.
“4-H has helped me learn and develop personal life skills. It has also taught me how to set goals and achieve them,” Bennett said. “I have met many great people from all of my 4-H experiences. These are things I can use forever, as 4-H goes on for life.”
