Feeding Forages to Livestock Is Focus of November Conference

10/20/2009

AMES, Iowa – Iowa livestock producers have the opportunity to hear all about grass-fed beef at this year’s Iowa Forage and Grasslands Council Conference, scheduled for Nov. 23-24.

The conference, to be held at the Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines, will feature speakers from the Iowa Beef Center, Iowa State University Extension, and the U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey is also scheduled to present on the importance of forages in Iowa.

Conference topics range from alternative uses for forages, to storing and feeding your forages. John Lawrence, Iowa Beef Center director and extension livestock economist, will discuss the economics of both forage production and grass-fed cattle production in his conference presentations. Several producers will offer insight into best practices in grass-fed and grain-fed specialty beef production during a morning discussion.

An evening roundtable discussion is planned for Monday, Nov. 23; the conference will continue as an all-day event on Nov. 24. Registration for both days, with meals included, is $40. Pre-registration continues through Nov. 17.
