Healthy Homemade Calendar Puts Nutrition and Fitness on Same Page

The benefits of well-balanced meals and daily physical activity are well documented. But fitting both into a regular routine isn’t always easy. The Iowa State University Extension Healthy Homemade 2010 Nutrition and Fitness Calendar is an attractive, helpful way to put both on the daily schedule.

ISU Extension specialists have filled the retro looking 2010 calendar with nutrition and exercise tips, recipes and menus that encourage a healthy homemade lifestyle. Looking a bit like Grandma’s kitchen, the calendar features a monthly recipe complete with ingredient list, preparation directions, nutrition facts and menu ideas.

“The calendar has recipes and photos of inexpensive, easy main dish and side dishes plus preparation tips and meal suggestions,” says Peggy Martin, ISU Extension nutrition program coordinator.  “It is a great resource for young adults and would be a useful, inexpensive gift.”

But it doesn’t stop there. The preparation of each recipe can be viewed at www.extension.iastate.edu/foodsavings/recipe. These videos walk even the most inexperienced cook through the recipe with ease, answering preparation and ingredient substitution questions.

In addition to facts promoting healthy homemade eating, the calendar encourages exercise, movement and physical activity. “ISU Extension is making physical activity part of all our nutrition programs – including the calendar,” said Martin. “We know activity is important for total health.”

A chart at the bottom of the calendar makes it easy to set activity goals; small boxes on each day are designed to track activity numbers. For people who have a hard time getting motivated, there are suggestions each month for building and sustaining physical activity habits. The last two pages of the calendar contain physical activity information – the amount of activity needed each day, how to fit it into your schedule, and ideas for increasing activity.

The 12-month full color Healthy Homemade 2010 Nutrition and Fitness Calendar can be ordered from the ISU Extension online store at www.extension.iastate.edu/store/ or by calling (515) 294-5247. Cost of the calendar is $2 plus shipping and handling; English and Spanish versions are available.
