AMES, Iowa – Attention all Iowa high school students who love the outdoors, enjoy spending time with children and are interested in leadership and citizenship opportunities. The Iowa 4-H Center is looking for students interested in volunteering during the 2009 summer camp season.
“Leadership campers participate in experiences that cultivate creativity, responsibility, leadership, generosity, flexibility, communication and time management qualities necessary to supervise youth and important to future employers,” said Traci Haselhuhn, Iowa 4-H Center program specialist.
Current freshman have the opportunity to serve as leaders-in-training (LIT) with the day camp program for 6- to10-year-olds, including assisting with theme-based crafts, games, snacks, swimming, lunch and rest time. In the evening LIT campers also help with resident camp activities. LIT registration cost is $130.
Current sophomores and juniors have the opportunity to serve as counselors-in-training (CIT) and assistant cabin counselors for a week. CIT campers shadow cabin counselors, assist with daily program sessions and evening all-camp activities, lead camp songs and cabin choice times -- as well as work on program set-up and "behind-the-scenes" details. CIT registration cost is $100.
LIT and CIT campers can register for any week of the summer to do their fieldwork experience, but they first must attend a training camp either May 16-17 or June 5-6. There is a $30 training fee.
