Lee County 4-H Member Receives Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship
AMES, Iowa – A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Lee County 4-H member. Nicole Walljasper, West Point, has received an Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa Foundation for Agriculture Advancement.
Walljasper, a nine-year member, is the daughter of Doug and Arlene Walljasper. She has been involved in the poultry, small pet and horse project areas and has been awarded blue ribbons for both photography and rabbit projects at the state level along with state recognition for rabbit showmanship. At the local level she has received honors in all of her livestock project areas and a personal development award. Walljasper also has served as her club’s vice-president.
“Being involved in 4-H and exhibiting at the fair has helped me gain more confidence in myself,” she said. “It has also taught me leadership skills by giving me the opportunity to hold offices in my club, and it’s helped me realize that I would really like to become a veterinarian.”
A recent graduate of Fort Madison High School, Walljasper plans to attend Iowa State University to major in animal science/pre-veterinary medicine.
In Iowa, the 4-H program is a part of Iowa State University Extension and headquartered on the ISU campus in Ames. For more information about 4-H, how to get involved or how to apply for a 4-H scholarship, contact the local county office of ISU Extension.
