Winneshiek County 4-H Member Receives Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship
7/30/2009
AMES, Iowa – A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Winneshiek County 4-H member. Jordan Hanson, Decorah, has received an Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa Foundation for Agriculture Advancement.
Hanson, a nine-year member, is the son of Randy and Lisa Hanson. He has been involved at the state level in the leadership and self-determined project areas and has received first place individual honors at the state judging contest. He also has been a member of the second place team at the state dairy quiz bowl and the Iowa All-Star Dairy Judging Team. A county 4-H council and county youth committee member, Hanson has served as club president and vice president and attended the Iowa 4-H Youth Conference.
“Being in 4-H has greatly improved my organization, leadership and communication skills,” he said. “It has also enabled me to expand on project areas that I really enjoyed like dairy. Showing dairy cattle at the county and state fairs along with participating in the state dairy judging and quiz bowl contests have helped me decide what I want to major in.”
A recent graduate of South Winneshiek High School, Hanson plans to attend Iowa State University to major in dairy science.
In Iowa, the 4-H program is a part of Iowa State University Extension and headquartered on the ISU campus in Ames. For more information about 4-H, how to get involved or how to apply for a 4-H scholarship, contact the local county office of ISU Extension.
