Pocahontas County 4-H Member Receives Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship
AMES, Iowa – A $1,000 scholarship has been awarded to a Pocahontas County 4-H member. Jessica DeWall, Pocahontas, has received an Iowa State Fair 4-H Scholarship sponsored by the Iowa Foundation for Agriculture Advancement.
DeWall, a nine-year member, is the daughter of Doug and Lola DeWall. She has been involved in the child development and issues project areas and has received state awards in swine showmanship, fashion revue, consumer management and photography. A county 4-H council member, DeWall also has served as club president and attended the Citizenship-Washington Focus.
“4-H has strengthened my skills in communication, leadership, goal planning and citizenship. It has taught me how to prepare for a demonstration and be a team player and role model for younger kids in our club,” she said. “I have also learned through community service projects about caring for others, which is something I plan to continue in my future. My time spent in 4-H has been a great learning tool, and the many skills and values will help me to achieve my goals of attending college and succeeding in my field.”
A recent graduate of Pocahontas High School, DeWall plans to attend Iowa State University to major in dietetics.
In Iowa, the 4-H program is a part of Iowa State University Extension and headquartered on the ISU campus in Ames. For more information about 4-H, how to get involved or how to apply for a 4-H scholarship, contact the local county office of ISU Extension.
